W.L. Davis District Roundtable

Roundtable is a district monthly meeting typically held the second Thursday of the month at Gregg Elementary (67601 Roxbury Rd, Houston, TX 77087) at 7:00 pm to help unit leaders plan and carry out their own program. Roundtable is a form of supplemental training for volunteers. The objective of roundtable is to give leaders program ideas, information on events and training opportunities, and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, informed, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts. Annual Planning: A common element of strong units is they all have a good annual program planned a year in advance. The plan is then shared with all families in the form of an annual program calendar. Two other key elements of successful units are trained leaders and having the right leaders.

New District Executive
Please join us in welcoming Roger Thomas as the district executive for the W.L. Davis District. His role as district executive will be to provide leadership and support to the volunteers in our district with a focus on district operations, membership recruiting, unit service, family Friends of Scouting, and product sales. Roger is a Prairie View A&M University graduate with a degree in communications with a minor in marketing. Born in California, but raised in Texas, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 56 here in the Sam Houston Area Council. Excitement is waiting as Cub Scouts travel the world on a passport to adventure as they learn new skills, and make new friends. Twilight camp is a council camp hosted by districts for Scouts entering 1st through 5th grade for the 2018-2019 school year. An awesome program is planned with activities such as BB guns, archery, sports, games, and crafts, rank advancements, Scout skills, fun and more. Camp is being held at Lucile Gregg Elementary (6701 Roxbury, Houston, TX 77087).
Many volunteers are needed to make camp a success, so please consider volunteering. Boy Scouts and youth ages 14-17 can also volunteer. The registration fee is $41.50 for the first Scout and $40 for each additional Scout. Adult and junior staff volunteers are $15. The registration fee includes a t-shirt, patch, program supplies, and a water bottle. An adult/guardian must register with a Tiger (1st grader).
- Register before 3/15/18 and Scouts get a $5 discount.
- Late registration begins 5/15/18. A late fee of $4 will apply; patches, t-shirts and craft supplies are not guaranteed for late registrations.
- Registration closes for youth and adults two weeks before the first day of camp.

Scout Fair Coupon Books
Scout Fair coupon books sales are a brilliant way for units to raise money and prepare Scouts to earn their own way! The Scout Fair coupon book offers great savings for the buyer, while Scouts earn commissions for every $10 coupon book purchased. At the Scout Fair Kickoff, unit leaders receive training and materials. All units receive a 30% base commission for each $10 Scout Fair coupon book sold. Units can also take advantage of early bird turn-in dates offering 5%, 3% and 1% additional bonus commissions. For more information, contact Tamekia Johnson.

Friends of Scouting
Friends of Scouting is an opportunity for families, friends, alumni, businesses and community organizations to support Scouting. The $33 registration fee goes directly to the national office of the Boy Scouts of America. If a Scout unit collects dues, that money stays with the unit to help pay for supplies, advancements and other activities. None of that money helps the Sam Houston Area Council. In order to keep Scouting affordable for all youth, the council runs an annual Friends of Scouting fundraising campaign.
Friends of Scouting helps:
- Recruit and train youth and leaders
- Provide assistance to those in need
- Keep camps and activities affordable
- Enhance programming and facilities
- Provide communication tools for volunteer leaders
Friends of Scouting contributions provide approximately 24 percent of the support the council receives each year. The success of Scouting depends on those who support it. Please help Scouting provide the resources necessary to make sure every youth can benefit from Scouting’s fun, exciting, adventure-filled activities that foster character, honesty, respect and life-long values.
Unit Leaders: Each unit is requested to hold a FOS presentation at your unit’s biggest gathering (typically the blue and gold banquet or a troop court of honor) during the months of February through May. The presentation, which takes approximately seven minutes to conduct, informs parents and leaders of all council services, its financial needs and extends an opportunity to help fulfill the need. Calling all unit leaders! Now is the perfect time to make it easy for Scouting families to find your unit.
Step 1: BeAScout.org has a Google pin for every unit! Update your unit information by signing into MyScouting, under Unit Tools select BeAScout, the click on Unit Pin Management. If you are the current unit leader and are unable to update your unit pin, please contact your district executive and ensure that you are currently registered as the unit leader or committee chair.
Step 2: Verify the information on the district website. Send corrections to the webmaster.
